Requested a Tax Extension? October 15 Is Your Deadline to File!

Posted by kftaxaccounting2014 on October 8, 2014 in Uncategorized | 0 comment

Warning: If You Requested a Filing Extension, It’s Time to File Your Tax Return!

Were you one of the people who requested a 6 month extension to file your taxes this year? If so, your time is nearly up!

It’s amazing how fast the time flies, isn’t it? But October 15 is the official deadline for individual tax returns if you filed for an extension to file your taxes back in April.

Whether you’re an intrepid sort who likes to file your return yourself or you use a tax preparation pro, here are some tax preparation tips to make the process of completing your return easier on everyone – yourself, your family, and your tax consultant.

  • Gather your records, tax forms, instructions, calculator and anything else you’ll need before you get started. It’s always easier to have everything at hand when you get started. Also grab a notepad and paper. If you discover you’re missing something while you’re completing your return, make a note of it so you remember to look for it.
  • Follow the instructions and work line by line. It’s easy to want to move ahead quickly, but you increase your risk of making an error if you do that. Slow and steady really does win the race.
  • Did you file your return and make a mistake? Don’t worry too much, but don’t drag your feet correcting it, either. The IRS form 1040-X is just the form you need to amend your return. But don’t wait too long – it’s better for you to find and fix the error rather than being audited and pay penalties.

If you do consider using a professional tax preparation service, remember that filing deadlines can be especially busy. The sooner you call and book an appointment, the more likely you’ll find the help you need – without having to pay a premium for rush service. If you need help filing your extension, give us a call. We’ll be happy to help.
