Choosing the right filing status

Posted by kftaxaccounting2014 on March 5, 2015 in Uncategorized | 3 comments

There are lots of factors that determine your status when it comes to filing your tax return. Are you single or married?or are you married  and filing separately or jointly?so many questions that needs to be answered……being single not only means you are married,it also means you were previously married but divorced or legally separated depending on the state law.

Married and filing a joint return seems simple enough but if your spouse died in 2014,then you can still file a joint tax return for year 2014. For married couple who chose to file separate returns, known in IRS lingua as “married but filing separately” status, this could be beneficial if filing separately results in less tax than when you file together. You should ask your tax preparer or CPA which of this statuses is more advantageous before you choose. In addition, note that filing separately is good if you want to be responsible only for your tax return.

If you have paid more than half the cost of keeping up a home for yourself and a qualifying person and you two are not married, then you can claim head of household but you should know there are certain rules that must have been met.

Are you a qualifying widow(er) with a dependent child?you may fall under this status if your spouse died either in 2012 or 2013 and certain conditions are met.

If you were married in a state that recognizes same sex marriage and now currently living in a state that does not recognize same sex marriage, then your status is same-sex married couples.
