We care and appreciate the military and their family

Do you know that there are provisions for military and their family members on filing their tax return? the IRS offers free tax help  for them.

Either you are on base or off base the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program(VITA) is available for you.

The IRS is in partner with the Armed forces tax council that are in charge of military tax programs and they do outreach  to the military worldwide. And by military I mean the navy, coast guard,Army,Air force and marine corps.

Some volunteers are trained  and staffed by the IRS on military tax issues which includes service in combat zone and are always available on sites. The staff can help with special  tax extensions, the new health care  law tax provisions, how to pay your taxes or with special rules that apply to the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Whenever you are going to the site to file your tax,you should take along with you the list below

  • Valid photo Identification
  • Social security number for you, your spouse and dependents.
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents.
  • Earning and dividend statements (Form 1099)
  • W-2,W-2G and 1099-R
  • Health insurance market place statement (Form 1095-A)
  • If you obtained your health insurance in the market place and you applied for exemptions, then you should go with your exemption certificate number.
  • A copy of your last year federal and state tax returns if available.
  • Direct deposit is advised,so you should go with your account details.
  • If you have children at the day care, you should go with the day care provider’s identification number and the total amount paid at the day care.
  • And any other  relevant information about your income and expenses.

If you are married  filing a joint  return and both of you cannot be present to sign your tax return, then you should come with a valid Power of Attorney Form(2848-Power of Attorney and Declaration and Representative). But in case your spouse is in a combat zone, then there is a special exemption that allows you to sign your tax return without the Power of Attorney.
